Production Note

Before immigrating to the United States, eventually settling in Butte, MT, my maternal grandfather, David Benjamin Hopkins, was born and raised in the seaside town of Swansea, Wales, UK—which was also Dylan Thomas’ birthplace. As with many Welsh folk, “Gramps” had a gift for song and the telling of tales—with which he delighted his grandsons on our annual summertime visits. My mother had a copy of A Child’s Christmas in Wales on her “knick-knack shelf”—that, sadly, remained unread by her middle son.

In August of 2016, I was part of a two-car caravan, taking my younger daughter, Maggie, to suburban Phoenix, AZ, to start her year-long fellowship at a theatre company there. To fortify myself for the journey, I checked out numerous audio books from the local library. Without giving it too much thought, one happened to be the Caedmon Audio recording of Dylan Thomas reading his poetry. One of the pieces was A Child’s Christmas… I was smitten—by his delightful, gloriously self-satisfied reading and, of course, by the piece itself. I thought it would make a wonderful EARTh project. So, I obtained the rights from his publishers, and made this adaptation. This, then, is my nod to my beloved grandfather and, more importantly, it is EARTh’s Christmas Gift to you—our Donors, our Patrons, and our Veterans—with our deepest thanks for your continued support over the years.
